Eastern redcedar is an excellent recorder of changes in environmental chemistry.

Tree rings can record changes in environmental chemistry, as each ring has a unique, measurable elemental composition.

Tree rings can reveal long-term changes in soil and atmospheric chemistry, with applications for research of pollution, disturbance, climate change, and more. One of the early focal points of research at CTRS, environmental chemistry research has continued and grown to include new opportunities for collaboration with the MU Research Reactor, currently the most powerful research reactor in the U.S.

Cadmium
Cadmium concentrations in eastern redcedar over 250 years
Leadgraph
Lead concentrations in eastern redcedar over 270 years

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

Documenting elevated lead concentrations since the early 1900’s in the Missouri Ozarks

Linking changes in calcium and magnesium concentrations to changes in fire activity

Exploratory analyses of how tree growth is affected by herbicides (ongoing)
